What Kind of Paint Is Best to Use on a Plastic Bathtub Backsplash?

The plastic in a bathtub backsplash or surround has a slicker surface than other materials, such as drywall and wood. This can make the plastic backsplash more difficult to paint, but does not make it impossible. With the proper paint and the right preparation, a plastic bathtub backsplash should hold a paint job like any other surface.
  1. Plastic Paint

    • The best paint to use on a plastic bathtub backsplash is a paint that is specifically labeled for use on plastic surfaces. Some epoxy paints include plastic among their recommended materials and many spray paints may also be used on plastic surfaces. Look for plastic paints that include waterproof in the description to help create a lasting paint job that can hold up to the water pressure and moisture in the bath area.

    Latex Paint

    • Like epoxy, some latex paints are labeled for use on plastic surfaces. These paints are generally water resistant, which makes them ideal for use on the plastic backsplash of a tub. Latex paints set up into a rubberlike feel, which blocks water from passing through and breaking down the paint. However, like other paints used on plastic, make sure to seal the paint for the best results.

    Prime the Surface

    • Before attempting to paint a plastic bathtub backsplash with any type of paint, go over the surface of the backsplash with fine-grit sandpaper until the surface feels slightly rough. Then, rinse the sanding dust from the wall and clean the wall with a degreasing cleanser. Once the wall dries, apply a primer to the sanded surface. Use a primer labeled for use on plastic or the primer won’t stick to the wall.

    Seal the Paint

    • Once you prime the surface of the plastic, one of the plastic-friendly paints should adhere to the surface. After applying the paint, let it dry for 24 to 48 hours and then, if you want to create a waterproof surface that can help your paint job last, apply a waterproof sealer over the paint. Waterproof sealer creates a transparent coating over the paint on a plastic bathtub backsplash that water cannot penetrate.
