Mounting Options for Undermount Sinks

Undermount sinks may seem to defy gravity by sitting under the counter, instead of relying on the counter to hold the weight of the sink and its contents. All undermount sinks come with mounting hardware that is designed for the specific sink, as well as some guidance from the manufacturer about the placement of the hardware. How you attach the hardware to the counter depends on the material the counter is made of.

  Clean the underside of the counter thoroughly to ensure the caulk seal between the sink and the counter does not fail. Rub off all debris from the counter with a microfiber cloth, which will not leave behind lint.

  Spread an even layer of silicone caulk on the top edge of the sink, where it will contact the underside of the counter. Push the sink up under the cutout in the counter and slide the sink to the final position where you wish for it to stay.

  Place a board on the counter so it spans the sink cutout width-wise. Insert one end of the bar clamp through the sink’s drain opening and place the other end of the clamp on the board.

  Turn the clamp handles clockwise to tighten them partially so the sink stays in place but you have room to install the mounting hardware.

  Follow the instructions from the sink manufacturer for the exact placement of the sink’s mounting clips on the sink. Drill holes in the underside of the counter where the sink clips’ mounting holes sit.

  Drive screws into the underside of an acrylic counter using a screwdriver. With other sinks, mix a two-part epoxy and apply it to the end of the mounting bolts before you drive them into the counter’s guide holes. Ensure the clips are securely under the sink and then tighten the bar clamps as much as you can by hand. Allow the sink to sit unused for at least 24 hours to allow the epoxy and silicone caulk time to cure.
