How to Install a Concrete Backer Board and Shower Pan

One of the quickest and easiest types of shower pans to install are the pre-fabricated plastic bases. They are used in homes around the world and provide a cheap alternative to the more expensive mud base and tile floor. However, tile walls are still often used with plastic shower pans, and part of the installation requires the use of a concrete board installed on the wall. This board gives the tile a cement-like base for adhesion and, combined with a moisture barrier, forces all water and moisture down the wall towards the shower pan itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your shower pan on the floor and mark its outline with a pencil. Remove the pan and apply a coat of adhesive to the floor within the perimeter lines. Spread the adhesive with the notched trowel. Set the shower pan, attach the drain flange and pipes with the pipe wrenches. Screw the flanges on the edge of the pan liner onto the wall studs with wood screws and the drill.

Cut the pieces of concrete board. Measure the pieces to fit with a tape measure and pencil and cut the pieces accordingly with the handheld circular saw and an all-purpose blade. Also measure for outlets and plumbing fixtures so that they will slide over these and attach flat to the wall. Start at the bottom of the wall ensure the board covers the tub flanges by at least an inch.

    • 3

Install the boards so that they are staggered up the wall so that no vertical joints match. Attach the boards to the wall with the wood screws and drill. Screw the boards in place at their four corners and then use the level to draw plumb lines referencing the studs so you can quickly sink screws in along that line. Space the screws apart every four to six inches.

Apply a coat of waterproofing before you install the tile. Paint it onto the wall using a paintbrush and cover the corners out at least six inches on either side. Cover the main surface of the wall with a paint roller and allow the entire area to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before installing your tile or natural stone.
