How to Replace Greenboard in Bathroom Ceilings

Greenboard is a type of drywall material that is used in bathrooms, as it performs better in a moist environment. If you have a hole in your ceiling or you are redoing the entire room, the old greenboard can be torn out and replaced with new panels. Previous experience drywalling is helpful, but not required for this project. Depending on the size of your bathroom, this project can be completed in a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Place dropcloths in the room. Anything removable should be taken out of the room. Everything else will need to be draped with plastic. Tape this into place. Cover the tub, the toilet, the sink and the floor.

    • 2

Put on your safety gear. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from crumbling greenboard. Gloves will protect your hands and a mask will help prevent you from inhaling dust during this job.

    • 3

Start cutting down the greenboard. Use a utility knife and start in one corner of the room. Cut through the greenboard and begin tearing it off with your hands. A prybar and hammer will also work.

    • 4

Remove any remaining nails or screws left in the ceiling joists. Knock down any remaining debris.

    • 5

Install the new greenboard. Start in the corner again. Place the greenboard against the ceiling joists. Use a cordless screwdriver and insert a screw into the joists at a rate of one every 12 inches.

    • 6

Finish the installation. Tape over the seams of your greenboard. Apply joint compound over the tape. Let it set. Sand everything smooth. Prime and then paint the ceiling.
