How to Lift a Sink from the Vanity to Tile the Vanity Top

If you're ready to remodel your bathroom, you aren't alone. A 2008 Consumer Reports study found that roughly 30 percent of home remodeling projects centered on the bathroom. You don't have to knock down walls and tear out cabinets to update your bathroom. Simple changes, like a new vanity top, give your bathroom a fresh look without the expense of a full-scale remodeling job. In order to properly tile your bathroom vanity, however, you must remove the sink from the counter.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the sink's water supply.

    • 2

Cut the caulk seal around the sink with a utility knife.

    • 3

Remove everything you have stored in the cabinets beneath the sink. Place a small plastic container underneath the sink's P-trap.

    • 4

Loosen the nut connecting the P-trap to the sink's drainpipe. Loosen the nut connecting the P-trap to the exit pipe.

    • 5

Remove the P-trap. Any excess water left in the sink's drainpipe or the P-trap should fall into your plastic container.

    • 6

Look underneath the sink for sink clamps. Unscrew and remove any sink clamps you see.

    • 7

Push the sink base upward from underneath the sink. This unseats the sink. Lift the sink away from the vanity.
