Sanded Grout Shower Tile Installation

Grout is a cement-like compound that dries to a stone-like hardness. Unlike mortar, which is used to bind building materials, such as bricks together, grout is used to seal joints between building materials to prevent moisture from seeping in. This waterproofing property makes grout an appropriate choice of sealing tiles in a shower.
  1. Types

    • There are two primary types of grout that you can use when installing tile in your shower: sanded grout and unsanded grout. Unsanded grout is appropriate for use when the space between the tiles in your shower is less than 1/8 inch wide, according to the Tile Council of North America. Sanded grout -- which is cement mixed with sand and color pigment -- should be used when the space between tiles is 1/8 inch or larger.

    Preparation

    • The process for grouting your shower tiles is the same whether you are using sanded or unsanded grout. Start by preparing your work sight. Grout dries to a stone-like hardness, so it is important to tape off any surface you don't want affected, including any fixtures, drains, walls and floors you are not going to work on immediately. Plan on working on one surface at a time, so the grout won't dry before you can sponge off the excess.

    Application

    • You should only use dry powder sanded grout when working with new construction, according to the North American Tile Cleaning Organization. Use a latex grout enhancer instead of water when grouting the tile in your shower. Apply the grout with a rubber float and make sure you get the grout deep into each crevice. Wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge, rinsing the sponge frequently.

    Clean Up

    • Remove the tape and clean up your applicator and sponge with warm soapy water. Clean up any excess grout that has settled on an unwanted location with a razor blade tool. Wipe down the grouted tile surface with a cheesecloth or paper towel to remove any grout haze. Do not leave any haze on the tile as it will be difficult to remove once it has dried completely. Inspect the area to make sure you didn't leave any gaps. Allow the sanded grout to dry for 48 hours for best results.
