How to Install a Vinyl Tub Shower Enclosure

A vinyl tub and shower enclosure provides a waterproof layer that protects the wall from moisture intrusion, whether the wall is made of drywall or plaster. If moisture were to regularly contact the wall surrounding the tub and shower, the wall would very quickly develop water damage, begin molding and need replacing. You must customize the vinyl shower enclosure pieces before installation, which requires care and precision so your measurements are accurate and the surrounds properly fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the location of the tub’s faucet components such as the handles and spout. Mark the component locations on the surround panel and cut openings using a drill with a hole saw attachment.

    • 2

Dry fit the panels on the walls around the tub. Measure any height gaps between the different panels and make note if any of the panels cannot sit evenly against the wall. Remove the panels and set aside.

    • 3

Remove obstacles on the wall that keep any of the panels from sitting flat. Use a wood chisel. Trim the bottom of any panel that sits higher than the others, using a saw.

    • 4

Peel the adhesive strip backings off the backside of the wall panels and spread adhesive evenly on the back on the panels. Replace the panels on the wall and then drive screws through the holes on the edges of the surround where wall studs are present.

    • 5

Apply bathroom caulk to the seam between the wall panels and bathtub. Thread the tub spout onto its pipe and assemble the faucet handles.
