Purpose of SanaGloss on a Toilet

For most people, cleaning the toilet is one of the least favorite household tasks. Imagine a toilet that needs very little cleaning, so you can cut down on the time it takes to scrub the toilet bowl. That is the concept and purpose behind SanaGloss, a patented finish available on toilets manufactured by the Japanese company TOTO. SanaGloss is also available on TOTO sinks.
  1. SanaGloss

    • Available on all low-flush toilets in the TOTO line, SanaGloss is applied to all of the fixture's finish. While SanaGloss does not completely eliminate the need to clean toilets, it alleviates mineral deposits and stains from hard water. There will still be some material in the toilet bowl after flushing, because 1.6-gallon-per-flush toilets lack the "rim-wash" capacity of toilets using larger amounts of water.

    How It Works

    • Using fixtures with a SanaGloss finish is environmentally friendly, as there is no need to use potentially harmful chemicals for cleaning. The SanaGloss finish prevents mold, bacteria, grime and debris from adhering to the toilet's ceramic surface, allowing it to stay clean longer. According to TOTO, it seals china surfaces with an ionized barrier. This creates an extremely smooth surface, preventing debris from sticking to it, and the "catalyzed ion barrier" repels dirt.

    Fixture Cleaning

    • When cleaning the toilet, take certain precautions to protect the SanaGloss finish. Don't use cleaners containing abrasives or do a lot of scrubbing. Liquid cleaners are the best choice. According to TOTO, the SanaGloss finish is not a coating, "but rather a finer, more structured way of baking the porcelain within the bowl portion of the toilets."

    SanaGloss Versus Conventional Surfaces

    • Under electrical probe microanalysis of barrier density, the surface layer of a SanaGloss finish, making up an ionized barrier, appears more uniform and with a higher density on its surface, as compared to a conventional surface. Extreme smoothness prevents stickiness. Because there is nothing for them to cling to, each flush washes away bacteria, molds and particles in the toilet. A comparison of a conventional and SanaGloss surface after two years of regular use shows little change in the SanaGloss from its initial installation, while the conventional surface is stained.
