Instructions

    • 1

Remove clutter from the floors, including trash cans, scales, laundry hampers and rugs. The more floor space you can see and use, the bigger your bathroom will feel. Move your hamper to the laundry room and your trash can and scale to a bathroom closet. Alternatively, put them in your vanity cabinet.

    • 2

Paint the bathroom walls a light and neutral color, like beige, white or gray. Use latex interior paint with a satin or semigloss finish, which is easier to clean than a flat finish. Darker paint colors tend to make a space feel smaller, while lighter colors make the room feel larger.

    • 3

Take down heavy window treatments, allowing natural sunshine to stream in. Add miniblinds, which you can draw up and down. Even when they're down and closed, they let in some light.

    • 4

Install a variety of light fixtures, including vanity lights and a small hanging ceiling light. Recessed lighting is ideal for illuminating dark corners without taking up additional space. Bright bathrooms look more spacious than dark bathrooms.

    • 5

Replace a large vanity with a smaller pedestal sink or one that fits in a corner.

    • 6

Hang one or more mirrors to make the room seem brighter and more spacious. The mirrors will reflect light to create the illusion of extra space.

    • 7

Replace your shower curtain with a glass shower door. Glass creates the illusion of a larger bathroom. If you can't afford a glass shower door, consider using a transparent shower liner instead of a shower curtain. This will also create the illusion of more space.

    • 8

Install wall-mounted glass shelving, wall cabinets and towel racks to make use of wall space without cluttering up the floor.

    • 9

Replace your swinging bathroom door with a pocket door. This will allow you to use the room that the old door needed to swing open and closed. You will probably have to open a wall to do this, but if you are already doing some remodeling in your bathroom, it's an option to consider.
