Tiling a Shower With Redgard

Using tiles in a shower is a common bathroom design element since tiles are easy to clean, resistant to moisture or heat damage and are aesthetically appealing. Redgard is a waterproofing membrane designed to prevent moisture from reaching underneath tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all moldings from the shower wall such as floor and ceiling moldings and decorative moldings.

    • 2

Clean the wall where the shower tiles will be placed. Make sure any dust, dirt or dried putty is removed. If necessary, lightly sand the wall with 220 to 240 grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Dip a paint brush into Redgard mixture and liberally apply along the corners and angles of the wall.

    • 4

Pour three cups of Redgard into a paint roller tray. Quickly dip a paint roller into the mixture and cover the walls. When applying, you’ll notice the mixture is bright pink. Thoroughly coat the shower wall until it is entirely pink.

    • 5

Allow the Redgard to completely dry. When dry, the solution will turn dark red. Once dried, apply a second coat in the same manner as the first coat.

    • 6

Check the Redgard layer once both coats have completely dried. Since this solution will shrink during the drying process, you may notice small holes. Fill in the holes with a paint brush, and allow the entire wall to dry overnight.

    • 7

Install the tile by using a thinset mortar once the Redgard mixture has completely dried.
