How to Install a Shower Light Fixture Surface Mount

A light in the shower helps make bath product labels legible, but if your home’s construction limits the use of recessed lighting, you might install a surface-mount light fixture. Building codes dictate that a ceiling fixture must be enclosed and mounted at least 6 feet above the tub or shower's water line. Your light should be rated for a “wet” not “damp," as damp environment fixtures are used outdoors not in bathrooms. Begin by hiring an electrician who has the tools and familiarity with local codes to install a circuit with a switch into the shower's ceiling.

Instructions

  1. Ceiling Outlet Box

    • 1

Turn off electricity and water to the area. Turn off the electricity at the circuit box before beginning any electrical work in the bathroom. Cut a hole to fit the ceiling outlet box and insert an expandable hanger bar. Position the bar at the bottom of two joists, with the end flaps resting on the back of the ceiling. Adjust it until it sits firmly against the joists. Before proceeding, fit the outlet box to ensure the edge is flush with the ceiling.

    • 2

Draw about 12 inches of cable through the side of the outlet box. Secure it to the side of the box with a cable clamp. Secure the outlet box to the hanger bar with the clamp, mounting hub or bolt supplied with the hanger bar.

    • 3

Insert the hollow nipple that threads through the center of the strap to protect the cable, if one comes with the fixture. Run the cable through the center of the strap and attach the strap across the outlet box with bolts or screws.

    Light Fixture

    • 4

Affix gaskets included with the fixture between the globe and base or between the base and ceiling exactly as the instructions on the box direct. Gaskets and placement will vary with fixture models, but all wet environment fixtures will have gaskets to protect the electrical parts of the installation.

    • 5

Remove 2 to 4 inches of plastic sheathing on the cable and 1 inch from the ends of each wire in the cable with a wire stripper. Hook the green or copper wire through a hole on the strap or outlet box to ground the fixture.

    • 6

Twist the white, or neutral, wire to the same color wire on the light. Twist the black, or hot, wires together. Twist plastic wire nuts over the connections.

    • 7

Bolt the base to the strap or other mounting platform with the hardware included with the light.

    • 8

Insert a light bulb in the fixture and attach the globe or cover. This may involve twisting it on or fixing it in place with short bolts.

    • 9

Turn on the electricity, check your light and complete any required inspections before turning on the water.
