Bathroom Vanities by Size

The size of a bathroom vanity is just as important as its appearance, because the size affects the amount of counter and storage space you have in your bathroom. A vanity's dimensions also may affect how much space you and others have when moving around a bathroom, so a large vanity isn't always the best option.
  1. Height

    • Standard vanities range from 29 to 31 inches tall. That 2-inch difference in height can have a significant effect on how much bending you have to do when washing up at your vanity. The sink and countertop you choose to attach to the vanity cabinet could significantly affect the vanity's overall height, especially if you choose a sink that sits high on top of the counter. The depth of a standard vanity cabinet is 16, 18 or 21 inches. A deeper cabinet provides more storage space to help keep the counter free of clutter.

    Width

    • You can find standard vanities in many widths, but fitting a bathroom with the widest vanity possible may make the space less functional by taking up too much floor space and interrupting traffic flow, particularly if you share a bathroom with other people. Consider how you move around your bathroom before choosing a vanity's width. Use pieces of paper or a cardboard to mark the dimensions of a new vanity on your bathroom floor to visualize its actual size. Maneuvering around toilets, whirlpool baths and other fixtures could be difficult if the vanity is too wide.

    Single Vanities

    • Single vanities have one sink, and some are 24 inches wide or less to fit smaller bathrooms. Standard single vanities come as wide as 60 inches, which provides a large amount of counter space. Use a single vanity with an off-center sink to increase the counter space in a small bathroom. You gain more useable space when the sink is set to the left or right on the counter than when it's in the center.

    Double Vanities

    • Double vanities have two sinks, and standard sizes are generally up to 72 inches wide. Consider whether a double vanity’s cabinet has ample storage space before buying it, because two sinks often take up a large amount of counter space. The wider a double vanity is the more lighting becomes an issue. Ceiling lights in the center of a bathroom probably won't provide sufficient lighting above both sinks. You may need to install separate lighting fixtures above the sinks, especially if you choose a new vanity that’s significantly wider than one you're replacing.
