Removing a Vanity From a Pedestal Sink

Manufacturers make pedestal sinks to stand on their own among the other bathroom fixtures. Some homeowners enclose the base of the pedestal sink behind a vanity in an attempt to add storage space, change the decor or to cover a damaged pedestal, floor or wall behind the sink. A decorator looking for a fast and fresh change to a bathroom may find removing the vanity to expose the pedestal is a good option.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all contents from the vanity.

    • 2

Remove the vanity drawers and unscrew the hinges with the appropriate screwdriver to remove the vanity doors.

    • 3

Cut the caulk between the vanity and the wall, the point at which the vanity top joins with the base and around the sink carefully with a utility knife.

    • 4

Lift the vanity top up and off the base with the help of an assistant. If the vanity top is difficult to remove, wedge a thin pry bar between the top and the base. Slowly pry the vanity top off the base on both sides and the front, then lift the vanity top off the base.

    • 5

Equip a power screwdriver or power drill with a screw head bit that matches the size and shape of the screws holding the vanity base to the wall studs.

    • 6

Insert the bit into the slot on the screw head and back the screw out of the wall stud. Repeat for each screw.

    • 7

Pull the vanity away from the wall. If the base remains firmly affixed to the wall, insert a flat pry bar between the back of the vanity and the wall. Pry the vanity base away from the wall on both sides.
