How to Hang a Pedestal Sink With Legs

Small bathrooms require small sinks to increase usable floor space. Restoring older bathrooms can require using original-style equipment to stay true to period and to serve a use within the limitations of the space. Either of these scenarios benefits from the installation of a legged wall-hanging sink, called a pedestal sink. The sink mounts directly to the surface of the wall and has a pedestal or numerous legs that help support the sink's weight and provide a decorative touch. Installing a pedestal sink correctly ensures it will remain in place for the long term.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the sink installation manual to determine the mounting height of the sink basin, or place the sink basin on top of the pedestal or legs and measure the distance from the floor to the center of the rear mounting slots with a tape measure.

    • 2

Make a pencil mark on the bathroom wall at the measured height. Place an additional mark 4 inches above the first mark and a mark 4 inches below the first mark. Cut along the bottom mark with a keyhole saw until you have a cut that hits two vertical studs. Cut along both studs until you reach the top pencil mark. Remove the material by cutting along the top mark. Set the material aside.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the two studs. Mark the distance on one face of a 2-by-8-inch length of lumber. Cut the lumber to according to your measurement with a circular saw.

    • 4

Push the cut 2-by-8 lumber between the studs. Align the top of the board with the cut line on the material. Run two 3-inch wood screws through each end of the board at a 45-degree angle to the board face with a screw gun. Ensure each screw head sinks 1/8 inch below the board's surface. Hold the cut piece of wall material over the board. Secure the material over the board by installing one 3-inch wood screw at each material corner.

    • 5

Apply joint compound to all four sides of the installed material with a 4-inch spackling blade. Set seam tape in the wet compound. Remove wet compound with the spackling knife. Allow the area to dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Apply silicone caulk to the back of the sink basin with a caulk gun. Hold the sink basin against the wall. Place a level on top of the sink. Adjust the sink until it sits level. Run one 3-inch wood screw through each mounting hole to secure the sink to the wall.

    • 7

Attach each leg to the bottom of the sink basin, according to the pedestal sink manufacturer's instructions. Tighten each fastener to secure the legs.

    • 8

Wipe a damp rag along the seam between the basin and the wall to remove excess caulk.
