• The standard dimensions for a bathtub with jets are 60 inches long, 32 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Tubs of this size hold approximately 42 gallons of water from the bottom to the overflow line.

Smaller Tubs

• Many homeowners seek smaller tubs to allow for more space in the bathroom. However jetted tubs that are smaller than the standard 60 inches by 32 inches by 20 inches are not recommended. James Walsh, team leader of product development and marketing for acrylics and enamel products at American Standard, told This Old House, "It just won't work right. The jets push a lot of force, up to 8 gallons per minute, which could send water right out of the tub." If you decide to purchase a smaller tub, make sure the jets are adjusted correctly to avoid overflow.

Larger Tubs

• Jetted tubs that are larger than the standard dimensions are also available. The challenge here is providing enough space for the tub. For these custom models you may need to remodel the bathroom to fit the desired size. Deeper tubs with higher rims are generally available and recommended for particularly tall people.

Corner Tubs

• Corner tubs come in different sizes and styles. Make sure to measure the space where you plan to install the tub before purchasing because corner tubs do not fit a particular standard. Consider the design of your bathroom as well as the plumbing specifications when making this decision.
