How to Link Valves in Shower Faucets

Linking valves to a shower faucet is a rudimentary process that requires only a few tools. In a shower, the hot and cold water valve is controlled by a single rotating handle. The faucet assembly typically includes a backing plate, a stem adapter, a faucet and the necessary screws required to install the new faucet onto the valves.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water at the main water supply line. Wipe away water around the valve with a clean, dry rag.

    • 2

Remove the plastic valve cover to expose the valve. The plastic cover is placed over the valve during construction so it’s not exposed to dust or debris. If the shower isn’t newly constructed, the valve will be exposed.

    • 3

Apply sealant around the gasket on the backing plate.

    • 4

Attach the backing plate over the valve. Insert the two long screws into the appropriate holes. Screw in each screw securely using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Place the stem adapter over the valve gear. The stem adapter is a small, metal piece that comes with the shower faucet assembly.

    • 6

Put the faucet’s faceplate on the stem adapter and backing plate. Attach the faucet to its casing. Tighten the faucet by hand.
