How to Make a Shower Pan From Plywood

Installing a shower in a bathroom can help save space if you do not have room for a bathtub or garden tub. If your tub does not have a shower enclosure, adding a shower can also give you the option of enjoying a shower instead of trying to wash your hair in a bathtub. Before you install your shower, you need to build a support for the shower pan liner. Although shower pan liner supports are commonly made from dimensional lumber or concrete, you can build the shower pan support out of plywood.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 3/8-inch-thick plywood
  • Circular saw
  • Wood glue
  • Drill
  • 4-inch wood screws
  • Electric screwdriver
  • Jigsaw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the shower pan liner with a measuring tape. Measure the height and width of the lip surrounding the liner.

    • 2

Measure two sections of 3/8-inch-thick plywood to the width and depth of the shower pan liner. Cut the sections with a table saw.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to one cut plywood section. Place the second section on top of the first and align the edges. Press down on the plywood sections to allow the glue to adhere.

    • 4

Measure and cut four plywood sections to the width of the pan liner and the height of the pan liner lip. Measure and cut four additional sections to the depth of the liner and the height of the pan liner lip.

    • 5

Bond two of the width lip support sections together with wood glue. Repeat this process with the remaining two width support sections. Repeat this process with each pair of depth support sections.

    • 6

Stand the width and depth support sections on the edges of the bottom pan support. Drill pilot holes through the width and depth support sections into the bottom support with a drill. Secure these sections to the bottom pan support with 4-inch wood screws, using an electric screwdriver.

Place the shower pan liner inside the plywood pan support. Mark the outline of the drain hole on the plywood. Remove the liner and cut along the outline with a jigsaw.
