The Difference Between a Slide-In & a Drop-In Bathtub

Bathtubs come in a range of styles and sizes. When selecting a bathtub for your home, you might narrow down your options to built-in units. Among these are slide-in and drop-in bathtubs. Differentiating between these can help you make the choice best for your lifestyle and bathroom space.
  1. Location for Slide-In Bathtubs

    • Slide-in tubs require installation inside an alcove with three walls. The unit slides into this space to create a bath nook. These bathtubs have a finished skirt on one side and they might be right or left-handed, depending on where the drain holes are cut when looking at the tub from the finished side. Make sure to choose a slide-in tub so the drain holes line up with the plumbing for the unit.

    Drop-In Bathtub Placement

    • Drop-in bathtubs do not require installation against a wall. These can be installed in the middle of the room, giving the feel of a free-standing bathtub with the stability of a built-in unit. Since these tubs do not have finished sides on the outside, you must build a deck to support the tub and create a covering for the sides, commonly tiled.

    Size

    • Drop-in tubs, especially whirlpool tubs, are generally larger than slide-in tubs. Whirlpool tubs are the largest option, and they are considered drop-in tubs. Slide-in tubs are best for small bathrooms where space is a premium. Some slide-in tub models have a shower built in, doubling the use of the bathtub's space. When choosing the bathtub, do not just look at the dimensions of the tub itself. Factor in space on at least one side of the tub to allow you to enter and exit the tub safely.

    Installation Requirements

    • Slide-in tubs are easier to install if you have a preexisting alcove in your bathroom. You must build a wood frame for the deck for a drop-in tub that will support the weight of the tub when it is full of water. If you are installed in a drop-in tub with water jets you will need to include space for the motor under the deck. The plumbing inside the walls or under the floor needs to be installed before you add the bathtub. Then you only have to hook the faucet, water valves and drain to the plumbing.
