Can a Bathtub Opening Be Cut?

Bathroom remodels can involve the replacement of the bathtub or shower unit with new materials. Your plans might include a new tiled shower, a larger tub, or a different positioning of the bathtub that opens your bathroom up. Many tubs are fit into cut areas of the floor, and are made from moldings and fiberglass. These are difficult to cut, but the project can work with the right preparation.
  1. Cutting the Tub Itself

    • A bathtub cut-out can be performed on most fiberglass tub moldings. This is useful when remodeling a bathtub for people who have mobility difficulties and need an easier way to get into the tub without entirely replacing it. A section is cut out of the bathtub wall, then a cap is fitted over the cut. Caulked and painted, the cut becomes waterproof.

    Limitations

    • Cutting out a bathtub opening is possible, but you should hire a professional to do the job and ensure it is properly sealed. A small leak in the cut-out can allow moisture to seep into the floor and cause structural damage over time. When a bathtub opening is cut, this removes any functionality the tub once had. Typically it can only be used as a shower afterward.

    New Tub Materials

    • If you are removing the old molding entirely and replacing it with another material like tile, you cannot "cut" an opening in the same way. But tile can be easily cut or sawed into different sizes, and you should be able to remove the mobility problem entirely by simply building a basic shower pan and shower walls with the tile. Construct your new shower into the shape that works. Tile allows for the repositioning of shelves and the creation of benches and stands, as well.

    Cutting for a Larger Tub

    • If you need a larger tub, you can cut out part of the floor or walls to expand your current tub size. While it is possible, this project is also for a professional. You will need to lay down new insulation and moisture barriers to protect the larger area.
