Measure the distance between the supporting studs holding the whirlpool in place.
Cut your waterproof barrier and concrete board to that size with a utility knife.
Remove the sticky back from the waterproof barrier and place the barrier from stud to stud. This will protect the studs from any moisture damage.
Set the concrete boards up against the studs and trim the boards to be level with the top of the whirlpool tub.
Screw the concrete boards into the studs, placing a screw every 6 inches.
Close any gaps between the top of the whirlpool and the concrete boards with a second sheet of waterproof barrier. The top of the tub will be mortared and tiled so this will not be seen.
Mix your thinset mortar in the bucket, using the manufacturer’s recommended amount of water. Attach the mixing paddle to your drill and stir the mortar with the paddle until the consistency resembles that of thick frosting.
Pick up some mortar with the smooth side of your rough-notched trowel and spread it onto the concrete boards. Spread the mortar until it is thin enough to just cover the board. Notch the mortar with diagonal notches, using the rough side of your trowel.
Press the tile sheets into the mortar starting from one side and working to the other. As you press the sheets into place, gently turn the sheets from side to side to better set the sheets into the mortar.
Cut the sheets as necessary to the right size for the top and end of the enclosing walls, using your utility knife. Let the mortar cure for 24 hours before continuing.
Mix the grout in the bucket, according to the manufacturer’s directions, using your mixing paddle. The grout will have a smooth consistency when the elastins are activated and it is ready for use.
Spread the grout onto the surface of the tile and press it into the grooves with the rubber trowel. Wipe away any excess, as you go, with the trowel. Let the grout set for two hours.
Moisten a sponge and start wiping away the excess grout on the tile surfaces. Keep wiping and rinsing until the tiles are completely clean and no haze appears. Let the grout cure for 24 hours.
Spray the grout with a grout sealant and let the sealant cure for at least 24 hours before enjoying your tub.
