Shower Steamer Options

A shower steamer can provide you with a relaxing spa experience in the comfort of your own home. In addition to cleansing your skin, the hot water vapors a shower steamer produces can help clear your sinuses. However, before you purchase and install a shower steamer, you should review all the shower steamer options available. Otherwise, you might end up with a shower steamer that doesn’t complement your decor, or a steamer that lacks value-added extras.
  1. Types

    • There are two basic types of shower steamers you can install in your bathroom: a custom shower steamer and a self-contained shower steamer. A custom shower steamer consists of a standard bathtub or walk-in shower stall that is outfitted with a vapor-tight enclosure and a steam generator. This type of shower steamer is the better option if aesthetics are a concern, because you can design the steamer to the specifications of your choosing and have it match your bathroom’s decor. A self-contained shower steamer is a stand-alone, prefabricated unit that has a built-in steam generator. While this type of shower steamer is easier to install, the space-capsule appearance of many self-container shower steamer models may be at odds with your bathroom’s decor. Basic self-contained shower steamer models can accommodate one or two adults and offer minimal amenities, such as seating and spaces for storing soap and shampoo. Luxury models can accommodate two or three adults and are often loaded with added features.

    Added Features

    • In addition to providing standard shower and steam-shower functions, some shower steamers can incorporate hot tubs or even saunas. A combination shower steamer/sauna, for example, allows users to choose between wet and dry heat. Other extras shower steamers may provide include decorative mood lighting, foot massagers, body massaging jets, digital control panels, remote controls and MP3 docking stations. Shower steamers also can include an aromatherapy oil feature, which allows you to add essential oils to the steam generator so the steam carries a pleasant aroma. For the maintenance-minded individual, a shower steamer can come with an auto-flush feature. This feature reduces the buildup of calcium in your shower steamer and prevents you from having to perform manual flush-outs.

    Installation

    • Installing a custom shower steamer requires the hiring of a few professionals. A steam generator dealer must install the generator in your bathroom. A contractor needs to build the stall and vapor-tight enclosure. A plumber must connect all the necessary pipes, and an electrician needs to connect the steam generator to its controls. By comparison, when a self-contained shower steamer is installed, only the wiring and plumbing work are needed once the unit is moved into your bathroom.

    Generator Considerations

    • With a self-contained shower steamer, you don’t need to worry about choosing the right steam generator, because the steam generator is already incorporated into the design. With a custom shower steamer, however, you must choose a steam generator that has enough power for your shower’s stall. A typical ceramic tile stall with a volume of 160 cubic feet requires a generator capable of producing at least 7 kilowatts.
