How to Install a Freewill Shower -- AKA Wheelchair Shower?

Kohler’s Freewill shower line consists of several shower stall liners designed for use with wheelchairs or by anyone who needs a little extra support in the shower. Some shower stalls in the Freewill line contain only grab bars, while some stalls contain both grab bars and seats. The liners may be installed over an existing shower pan, or if no shower pan exists, you must build a shower pan over which you will install the Freewill shower liner.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth of the Freewill shower base. Cut into the floor to this depth, plus an additional 3/4 inch, using a circular saw to cut floorboards and the tops of joists in a wood floor. Use a sledgehammer to break up a cement or concrete floor.

    • 2

Cut wood boards of the same height as the joists in a wood floor down to the length of the space between the joists. Secure the boards to the joists every six inches to create a solid wood grid, and install a piece of ¾-inch plywood on top of the grid. If you break up too much of a cement or concrete floor, mix up a batch of premixed concrete and spread it over the floor’s surface with a flat trowel to build the floor back up to level and let it dry.

    • 3

Open a vinyl liner over the shower and center it. Press the liner down into the lowered area of the floor, tucking it into corners to shape it for the space. Find the drain under the liner and cut the liner around the drain with a utility knife, leaving approximately ¼ inch of liner hanging over the drain’s edges all around.

    • 4

Apply silicone adhesive around the drain beneath the liner with a putty. Center the liner back over the drain and press it into place, holding it for at least 60 seconds to ensure that it stays. Fold in the outer edges of the vinyl liner and begin applying adhesive to the floor beneath the liner from the center around the drain outward toward the edges. Press the liner down into the adhesive, smoothing it out as you move out toward the edges, and cut off any of the liner that extends beyond the opening.

    • 5

Measure the distance from the floor and walls to any fixtures in the shower, such as the drain, the shower head and the knob. Cut openings at these locations in the Freewill shower stall so that the fixtures fit through the walls of the stall. Remove all fixtures, such as the shower head and knob, and hold the shower stall up in position to check the fit.

Apply a line of silicone adhesive along the back of each flange. Fit the Freewill shower stall into place against the walls, press the flanges back against the side walls and nail the flanges in place with the provided nails.
