Elevation of a Wall-Mounted Toilet

Create more space in your bathroom with a wall-mounted toilet. These fixtures take up less space than traditional toilets because the tank and drain are installed behind the wall. When installing these fixtures, you are not tied to their construction to determine the seat height.
  1. Why Height Matters

    • Toilets have a wide range of heights, from those mounted on the floor to raised seats for the disabled. When installing a wall-mounted toilet, the seat needs to be high enough for all family members to easily reach, including shorter adults and children. Higher seats are easier to use for those with joint difficulties or for the very tall. To avoid problems with using a wall-mounted toilet, you will need to install it so the seat is at a similar height to a traditional toilet.

    Traditional Seat Height

    • The traditional height of a toilet bridges the distance between those mounted on the floor and raised seats. These are standard units to accommodate the widest range of users. Children and adults can both reach the seat on a traditional height toilet, which is 14 inches. If you want your wall-mounted toilet to be used by tall and small family members alike, install it at this elevation.

    Raised Seat Height

    • Most chairs have higher seats than the 14-inch-high seat on a traditional toilet, and for those with difficulty getting in and out of the average chair due to height or joint problems, you might want to raise the seat height for a wall-mounted toilet. An additional 4 inches of height makes reaching the seat easier. If you are installing a wall-mounted toilet in a home occupied by the aged or disabled, consider installing it so the seat is 18 inches above the floor.

    Other Construction Considerations

    • The height of the toilet will also depend on the plumbing inside the wall. The total height for the portion inside the wall for a wall-mounted toilet ranges from 44-1/2 to 48-1/2 inches. The flush mechanism is at the top of this height. If you are installing a raised-height toilet, take into consideration that raising the toilet seat will also raise the flush mechanism for the toilet. Install the toilet seat so that the user can easily flush it.
