How to Install a Bathroom Green Board

A bathroom is filled with elements that are harmful to the structure of the house. Your shower and sink emit steamy heat, and the water in the toilet adds to this moisture. This combination of high temperatures and moisture will destroy standard drywall in very little time. Green board is a moisture-resistant drywall designed to withstand this environment. The paper face of your green board is still vulnerable to heavy deposits of water. So, before you install green board, you must remove every fixture from your bathroom and apply a shield of oil-based paint that will protect your new walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your drop cloths on a large, flat surface in an outdoor or a well-ventilated, indoor area. Lay your green board on top of the drop cloths with the green paper side facing up.

    • 2

Cover the face of each piece of drywall with oil-based enamel paint. Roll the paint on smoothly and let it dry for four hours. Do not leave the freshly painted drywall outside overnight where it will be ruined by the morning dew.

    • 3

Hold a piece of green board against the wall studs. Align each side edge of the drywall with the center of a stud. Drive hot-dipped, galvanized screws through the board to hold it to the studs. Place a screw every 8 inches along the entire length of every stud behind the drywall. Countersink the head of every screw with your screw gun.

    • 4

Cover every seam between the drywall boards with self-adhesive, mesh drywall tape. Cover every one of the screw heads with a spot of the mesh tape. Cut the tape as necessary with your razor knife. Drag the blade of your 6-inch drywall knife along the length of every piece of tape to ensure a tight bond.

    • 5

Apply a smooth patch of drywall compound over every screw head and seam. Smooth the compound over the screw heads with your 6-inch drywall knife. Smooth the compound covering the seams with your 12-inch drywall knife. Let the compound dry overnight before continuing.

    • 6

Rub the compound covering the seams and screw heads with sanding screens. Make the dried compound as smooth as possible so that it blends with the surrounding drywall. Be careful not to remove too much compound exposing the mesh tape. Wipe the dust off of the walls with a clean, dry rag.

Paint all of the unpainted areas on the walls with a fresh coat of oil-based, enamel paint. Let the paint dry. Paint the entire wall. Let the paint dry overnight before reinstalling your bathroom fixtures.
