What Is a Right Handed Bathtub?

Whether you are part of the 90 percent of people who are right-handed or the 10 percent who are lefties, bathtub handedness may be more a matter of style rather than necessity. However, handedness is important for elderly or disabled individuals who need to be able to easily grasp handles, edges and other components while moving in and out of baths. Similar to its left-handed counterparts, right-handed bathtubs can come customized according to users’ needs and design preferences.
  1. Configuration

    • Handedness in bathtubs often refers to the end where the drain is located. Whether your bathtub is right handed or left handed is also determined by the shape and curvature of your bathtub. For example, if you have a P-shaped bathtub and the “P” or square portion is to your right, then you have a right-handed bathtub. The same is true for bathtubs with curved edges toward one side or the foot end of the bath. The area that curves to a point or extends outward near the drain or foot of the bath will determine handedness. Likewise, right-handed baths that are rectangular shaped and surrounded by walls on three sides open out on the user's right side.

    Types

    • Right-handed bathtubs can also come in different shapes and styles. Bathtubs typically fall into four main types: recessed or alcove tubs; corner tubs; drop-in tubs; and freestanding tubs. Recessed and corner bathtubs are the most common and space efficient for homes. Right-handed styles are exposed on the right side of the tub and available in a wide range of colors and materials. Drop-in bathtubs are deeper and rest on a platform above the floor. They can also be installed so the edge is level with the floor. Freestanding bathtubs stand on claw feet, wooden plinths or other types of footing. These tubs can either be exposed on all four sides or tiled into the wall.

    Features

    • If you prefer a right-handed configuration for your bathtub, look for versions with the faucet and the drain on the right side. Also, right-handed bathtubs will have built-in seats on located along the left side of the tub. For deep tubs with retractable doors, this is convenient for accessibility and easy movement in and out of the bathtub. Grips or handles are generally installed along walls on the left for right-hand configurations.

Right-handed bathtubs can also be purchased with electronic controls that control the timing and level of water pressure from spray nozzles and jets. Heaters help regulate water temperature and keep water hot for longer periods. Other features include bathtub interfaces that project sound such as instrumental music and chromatherapy light with changing colors.

    Considerations

    • Although the location of a bathtub's drain hole or straight edge is a common rule of thumb for determining handedness, manufacturers hand their bathtubs differently. Read the product descriptions and view pictures or physical models in person to ensure that you purchase the correct configuration.
