How to Build a Shower Pad

Many materials used for floors of showers and bathtubs can become slippery when wet, posing a significant risk for the elderly and for people with balance issues. A shower pad can provide better traction when wet. Your feet stick better to materials such as rubber, even when wet, reducing the risk of a fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your shower floor to determine the size to make your shower pad. The size of the pad can vary. Some people may want the pad to cover the entire shower floor, with a hole cut out for the drain. Other people may prefer to make a smaller rectangular shower pad that covers the main area of the shower floor they stand on. The size, coverage and shape of the shower pad are a matter of personal preference. The measurements only serve as a guideline.

Cut the rubberized shelf paper into the desired size and shape; rubberized shelf paper is thin and easy to cut.

    • 3

Clean your shower floor, then completely dry it with a towel.

    • 4

Place waterproof adhesive onto the bottom of the shower pad. The shower pad should stay in place on its own; the same properties that prevent you from slipping on the shower pad also prevent it from slipping on the shower floor. The adhesive provides an extra layer of protection from the shower pad moving.

Place one of the edges of the shower pad on the shower floor. Roll the shower pad along the floor until it is in place.
