Ideas for a Toilet Topper Cabinet

Small bathrooms require thinking outside the box to make use of all the available space. One of the most overlooked areas is the space above the toilet. Cabinet space in a small bathroom is at a premium. The space above the toilet is a good spot to add a toilet topper cabinet. It’s out of the way and you can easily find cabinets in many places that will work above the toilet, either attached to the wall or as part of a shelving unit that straddles the toilet.
  1. Cabinetry with Shelving

    • Purchase or build the cabinet attached to shelving that straddles the toilet and leaves the toilet tank lid accessible. This type of cabinetry doesn’t get attached to the wall as it stands on its own over the toilet. Use pine to create the sides that sit on either side of the toilet. Add shelves above the toilet, plus cabinet doors, pull knobs and hinges to have an enclosed cabinet. Stain and varnish the pine cabinetry or paint it to match your bathroom colors.

    Assembled Cabinetry

    • Measure the width of the toilet and purchase a pre-made cabinet that matches that width from any home improvement store. Attach the cabinet to the wall just above the toilet to leave room to access the toilet tank as needed. Secure the cabinet to the wall studs by using a stud finder and anchor bolts through the back of the cabinet to the studs. That way, it can handle the weight of the cabinet and the items stored inside. Add hooks or a towel rack below the cabinet for added towel storage.

    Antique Cabinet

    • Visit garage sales, thrift and gently used stores for an old cabinet to use as a conversion for the toilet topper. For a few dollars, you can pick up an old cabinet and easily convert it for your bathroom. Leave it as it is for a French-distressed look, or sand and refinish it for an updated look. Take your tape measure with you and confirm the cabinet is the width of your toilet to ensure it fits in the space.

    Tech Look

    • Look for an old steel metal cabinet and use it in your bathroom as a toilet topper when you want an edgy and updated contemporary look. Match the mirror above the bathroom sink or vanity to the metal cabinet for an all-over “tech” look. Look in the tool section of a department or home improvement store for a metal shop cabinet that might work over the toilet, and won't cost as much as other cabinetry.
