Hydro Systems Acrylic Shower Pan Installation

Plastic shower pans are not only one of the cheapest and most common types available, but they are also the easiest to install. While concrete shower pans and ceramic tile shower pans require an expert craftsman, any do-it-yourselfer with some spare time and basic carpentry knowledge and tools can install a plastic pan. Hydro Systems is a manufacturer of acrylic pans, and their versions are mounted exactly the same as any other plastic pan.

Instructions

    • 1

Maneuver the plastic shower pan into place within the alcove where it will be installed until it is tight against the wall studs. This is known as dry-laying the pan in place. Use a pencil to draw the outline of the outer perimeter of the pan on the floor where it will be installed; this will define the area where you need to spread the thinset mortar. Remove the pan and set it aside.

    • 2

Mix up a batch of thinset mortar in a bucket. If you are working with the typical 3- or 5-gallon bucket from your home improvement store, roughly a quarter of the bucket should be sufficient thinset. Add water slowly, according to the packaging instructions, and mix the dry thinset with a drill equipped with a paddle attachment until you have a thick, creamy texture.

    • 3

Use a notched trowel to apply the thinset mortar to the floor of the enclosure within the penciled outline. Move the mortar in all directions before combing it evenly to leave a smooth, even layer with the notched pattern from the trowel.

    • 4

Set the shower pan on top of the mortar and firmly press it down across the entire pan with your hands. Move it gently in all directions while pressing downward then ensure it is tight against the wall studs.

    • 5

Mount the flanges of the shower pan to the wall studs. Use self-tapping screws and the drill. After the tub is screwed in place, wait a minimum of 24 hours before installing wall panels and shower walls.
