Types of Old-Fashioned Claw Foot Faucets With No Shower

There are three different types of claw foot faucets, based on how they’re designed to be mounted. Each type may or may not come with a shower diverter that supports a handheld shower. You can identify whether a specific faucet will support a handheld shower by looking for the diverter, which may be capped with a riser nut. However, before deciding which type of claw foot faucet to install in your tub, you need to take some measurements.
  1. Measuring

    • Some claw foot tubs contain predrilled faucet holes. If yours does, measure the holes to determine which type of faucet you need. Measuring from the inside of the hole on the right to the outside of the left-most hole will give you the correct number. The standard measurements for all faucet types are 3 3/8 inches, 7 inches and 8 inches. Most faucets are 3 3/8 inches. If your measurement is non-standard, you’ll need to purchase a faucet with an adjustable center. If you don’t have holes drilled in your tub, you'll either need to have them drilled, or use a freestanding faucet.

    Free Standing

    • Freestanding faucets are used with European style claw foot tubs. These tubs may have a rolled rim that goes all the way around the tub so you can position the faucet wherever you want. Faucets can be mounted on the bathroom wall or to the floor. European style claw foot tubs are more spacious and permit deeper water levels, but they don’t offer as many options for faucets.

    Tub Wall Mounted

    • Tub wall mounted faucets are the most common type of faucet in the United States, and they can usually be found on classic American style claw foot tubs. The holes for mounting are found on the end or the side of the tub, just above the overflow hole and usually measure 3 3/8 inches from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole. Tub wall mounted faucets are the most economical and offer the widest selection.

    Rim Mounted

    • Rim mounted faucets are often used on antique reproduction claw foot tubs, on slipper style tubs, and on large or acrylic claw foot tubs. One advantage of this type of faucet is that it frees up space inside the tub. The holes can be found on the end or the side of the tub and they usually have 7-inch centers. Like European style tubs, rim mounted tubs tend to offer deeper water levels.
