How Do I Install My Pegasus Bathtub/Shower Faucets to Rough Plumbing?

Installing a Pegasus bathtub and shower faucet on rough plumbing will require some soldering or gluing, depending on whether the water pipes are PVC or metal. Be consistent when selecting the necessary fittings such as nipples and elbows. Purchase PVC fittings to connect the faucet to PVC water pipes, copper fittings for copper water pipes and galvanized iron fittings for galvanized iron water pipes.

Instructions

    • 1
Copper fittings cause galvanized iron pipes to rust and corrode.

Smooth the cut ends of the water pipes. Use a utility knife to cut away the rough edges on PVC pipes. Clean burrs off metal pipes with a reaming or de-burring tool. Use an emery cloth to clean the outside and inside of metal water pipes. Do not touch the cleaned metal pipe ends with bare fingers. Spread flux on the inside and outside of the cleaned metal water pipe ends with a flux brush. Apply PVC pipe cleaner-primer to PVC water pipe ends.

    • 2

Hold the Pegasus bathtub/shower faucet valve in place. Measure the distance between the rough plumbing water pipe ends and the water pipe openings on the faucet valve. Install pipe extensions, if necessary, to connect the water pipes to the faucet valve. Pipe extensions or nipples are available in a variety of lengths. Use 1/2-inch-diameter extensions or nipples with two male ends, one threaded and one smooth.

    • 3

Wrap Teflon tape clockwise around the threads on the threaded ends of PVC or metal nipples. Screw the nipples into the water intake openings on either side of the faucet valve. Tighten them by hand, and use the pipe wrench to finish tightening them. Do not over-tighten.

    • 4

Apply PVC glue to the rough openings on PVC water pipes and the smooth male ends of PVC nipples. Insert the male nipple ends into the rough openings of the hot and cold water pipes. Solder metal water pipes and nipples together using a propane torch and 1/2 inch of lead-free solder on each water pipe. Remove the cartridge from the faucet valve fixture before soldering. Excessive heat will damage the cartridge.

    • 5

Connect a 1/2-inch-diameter shower riser pipe to the shower riser pipe opening on the top of the faucet valve. Connect a tub spout pipe to the tub spout opening in the bottom of the faucet valve. Attach a 90-degree elbow at the bottom of the tub spout pipe with another length of water pipe extending into the tub. Make sure the end of the tub spout pipe extending into the tub has a threaded male end. Wrap Teflon tape clockwise around the threads on all the fittings before connecting them.

    • 6

Use a wet rag to clean excess solder off the water pipes. Put the cartridge back into the faucet valve fixture. Install the waterproof wall covering.

    • 7

Place the shower arm flange over the shower arm. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads on each end of the shower arm. Screw the shower arm into the shower riser pipe. Screw the shower head onto the shower arm. Screw the tub spout onto the tub spout pipe until it is snug against the wall.

    • 8

Remove the tub and shower cap from the faucet valve. Slide the escutcheon onto the faucet valve fixture, and use a screwdriver to secure it with the screws provided.

    • 9

Adjust the water temperature limits if the Pegasus bathtub and shower faucet is equipped with a temperature-limiting feature. Replace the tub and shower cap on the faucet valve. Use a screwdriver to attach the handle assembly to the faucet valve with the screw provided.
