What Is the Correct Height for Bathroom Wall Sconces?

Adding lighting in bathroom is more than just putting up a light in the ceiling. Wall sconces enhance the amount of light in the bathroom. These lighting fixtures need to be high enough to avoid a hazard to your head, but low enough to cast light in the room. Find the proper height for installing your wall sconces so they cast the right amount of light in your bathroom.
  1. Where to Use Wall Sconces

    • Use wall sconces in a bathroom for practical and decorative reasons. The lights in the sconces reflect off the ceiling, providing soft, ambient light in the room. The sconces are decorative and should match the rest of the décor in the bathroom. Traditionally, wall sconces are placed on either side of the mirror in a bathroom to provide adequate lighting while using the mirror.

    Height of Wall Sconces

    • The height of the wall sconces will depend on the people using the bathroom. Ideally, the sconces should be at eye level. In bathrooms for children, this rule does not have to apply, and the sconces should be set at a height for general use - 66 inches from the ground to the center of the fixture. If the sconces are the only lighting source around the mirror, set them at face height - about 60 inches from the ground.

    Width Between Sconces

    • If you are installing sconces on either side of the mirror in the bathroom, use the center of the mirror to determine the distance between the sconces. Place sconces between 18 and 20 inches to each side of the center line of the mirror. In bathrooms where you will install more sconces than two flanking the mirror, use a distance of 36 to 40 inches between sconces, and maintain the same distance between sconces all around the room for an even distribution of light.

    Precautions

    • Opt for wall sconces designed for use in bathrooms. Bathroom sconces are specially sealed to prevent water from leaking into the electrical components of the sconce. Check local building codes to ensure the sconce meets required codes. Consider installing incandescent bulbs in the sconces. Fluorescent lights can make your face appear washed out. For women, this could result in the application of too much makeup while viewing yourself in the mirror.
