How to Brace Rafters in an Attic

Roof rafters help protect the structural integrity of your home by supporting the weight of the roof. However, a weak rafter can lead to a sagging roof, which can cause snow and ice to accumulate. This can result in roof leaks, which can damage the interior of the home. Bracing rafters in an attic is a relatively straightforward process that requires only basic carpentry skills and supplies; however, you should contact a contractor to ensure that bracing is sufficient to protect your roof.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the rafter on each side with a measuring tape. Mark the center of the rafter on each side with a pencil. Measure the distance between the center marks.

    • 2

Cut a section of 2-by-6-inch pressure-treated lumber a length equal to the distance between the center marks with a circular saw. Place the lumber section against one side of the rafter sections, so the bottom edge meets the center marks on the rafters. Mark the lumber section along the bottom edge of the rafters to create a diagonal line at each end.

    • 3

Miter the lumber section along the diagonal lines with a miter saw. Place the lumber section, so the mitered ends meet the bottom edge of the rafters. Using a drill equipped with a screwdriver bit, insert 6-inch wood screws to attach the lumber section to the bottom of the rafters.
