How to Plan a Church Expansion Project

As membership at a church grows, the church must expand to meet space needs. A church expansion project, as well as any other construction or remodeling project, is usually thoroughly discussed in an organization's business meeting. The size of the church and the church's denomination are important factors in determining how the church will plan for an expansion. Larger churches may not involve members in the planning, while smaller churches will include all members. Planning for a church expansion will allow the church to discover how much money they need to raise for their project and what, if any, contractors they will need to hire.

    • 1

Conduct a church business meeting to discuss the expansion project with officials. If others do not agree that the project is necessary, you may need to prove why a project is needed.

    • 2

Discuss the needs for the expansion project. These include bathrooms, classrooms or an expanded auditorium Write down what the church members or officials agree that needs expanding upon or adding to in the church.

    • 3

Draw out a floor plan for the expansion project with graph paper to assist in drawing it to scale. If any people in the church have experience in drafting or drawing blueprints, they may be able to draw out a better floor plan for the project.

    • 4

Seek out free or low-cost estimates from contractors in the community. If any church members are contractors, they may be able to negotiate a lower price for the expansion project or agree to do the project for a reduced rate or for only the cost of materials. Either way, seek an estimated cost of the expansion in order to financially plan for the project.

    • 5

Determine if any members of the church can volunteer time to work on the project. The more church members are willing to volunteer, the less the expansion will cost. Because people from so many professions attend a church, you may be able to find licensed electricians, plumbers and carpenters within the congregation to assist with the expansion project. If not, you will have to seek contractors and obtain bids on the project.

Plan a budget once the plans are all made for the expansion project and the final cost is determined. Decide how the church will save for the expansion, whether you will take a portion of the weekly donation or organize fund-raisers for the project.
