How to Cut and Install Wood Trim

Wood trim can be found in almost every home. Cutting and installing new wood trim is a simple job for many handy homeowners. Cut and install ne trim for your home by following a few instructions. Knowing where to start will help.

  • Wood molding trim
  • Miter saw
  • hammer

  • Pneumatic nail gun (optional)
  • Wood putty
  • Caulk
  • Paint or polyurethane

Instructions

      Measure the door or window where the trim will be installed with a measuring tape. Measure the top first, from corner to corner. Transfer the measurements to the back of the molding, allowing three or four inches on either side for an angled cut. When transferring the measurement, indicate the direction of the cut.

      Set the miter saw to a 45-degree angle. Place molding flat against the of the saw. Cut trim to size.

      Measure, mark and cut all the pieces of trim for the window or door you are working on.

      Place molding on the door or window. Nail the molding into place around the door or window. Hammer the finish nails into the trim and then use a nail set to countersink the nails. A pneumatic nail gun can also be rented and will make the job go faster.

      Fill nail holes with wood putty and allow to dry. Caulk any large gaps surrounding the molding. Let the caulk dry.

      Paint or finish the wood trim molding. Let the paint or polyurethane finish dry completely before use.
