How to Build a 3D Floor Plan

Architects rely heavily on 3D software to create most of their work, including floor plans. Do-it-yourselfers can access free, easy-to-use tools on the Internet that allow them to build 3D floor plans without having to purchase expensive software or contract an architect.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a 3D floor plan tool online. The Small Blue Printer web site offers a free, easy-to-use tool.

    • 2

Select one of the options available on the "Welcome" message. The options are "Blank plan," which allows you to start your 3D floor plan from scratch, and "Sample plan," which allows you to pick from four different, pre-designed 3D floor plans.

    • 3

Add walls to your plan by selecting the vertical or horizontal "add wall" from the tool on the right-hand side of the screen. Even if you selected a "Sample plan," you can add walls to your 3D floor plan.

    • 4

Click and hold on the wall that appears on the floor plan. Drag the wall to the location you want it to go, and release the mouse button to place the wall.

    • 5

Resize the wall to your desired specifications by selecting the "resize selected object" tool on the right-hand side of the screen. If you decide you want a horizontal wall instead of a vertical wall after you already selected and placed a vertical wall, use the "rotate selected object" tool located to the right of the "resize selected object" tool. To delete the wall, use the "delete selected object" tool.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3 through 5 until you have built the structure you want.

    • 7

Add windows and doors to your 3D floor plan in the same way that you added walls, except using the "add window" and "add door" tools, respectively. You can also resize, rotate and delete the windows and doors however you see fit in the same way that you resized, rotated and deleted walls.

View your floor plan in 3D by clicking the "Isometric view" tab at the top of the screen. This tab is located to the right of the "Design" tab and to the left of the "3D Walkthrough" tab.

    • 9

Take a 3D walkthrough of your 3D floor plan by clicking on the "3D Walkthrough" tab.

    • 10

Print your 3D floor plan by clicking on the ""Print" tab located to the right of the "3D Walkthrough" tab. Select the line type and layout of your floor plan, then click "Print."
