Tips on Finishing Concrete

If you have recently completed a concrete project in or around your home, you may be wondering, "What next?" If you finish their home projects correctly, they will look perfect and last a long time. There are some concrete finishing steps that are optional, and just change or improve the look of the concrete. Other finishing techniques are essential for all concrete and will ensure that your concrete surface lives up to all that it can be.
  1. Allow Enough Time

    • All of the surface moisture must evaporate from the concrete before you can continue with any treatments, such as weatherproofing. This can take 30 minutes to several hours. In addition, the concrete will require plenty of time to cure. Small areas may cure in only a day or two, but there is no guarantee. Large areas can take up to several weeks to cure completely. Do not ruin all of your hard work by stepping on the concrete too quickly.

    Smooth the Surface

    • An otherwise perfect concrete surface can be ruined if it is uneven or rough. Run a metal screed along the tops of large slabs of concrete to level them. Work the surface of the concrete using rubber or magnesium floats and metal trowels until it is as sleek as glass, if desired.

    Add Texture

    • Concrete steps and surfaces that may become damp, such as patios and pool borders, can be dangerous if they are too smooth. Use common household items like scrap lumber or an old broom to texture the concrete once the surface is dry. A stucco texture can be created using a hand trowel, but is hard on bare feet. A power trowel is a good choice to finish the surface of concrete when minimal, but consistent, texture is needed.

    Add Pizazz

    • Concrete can be painted or stained once it has cured completely, so that it better matches your existing decor. You can also add accessories like beads and shells after the surface moisture has evaporated from the concrete, but before it completely hardens.

    Protect Your Masterpiece

    • The best way to extend the life of your concrete surface is to seal it. Once the concrete is thoroughly cured, coat it with two applications of masonry sealant. Let the sealant dry for 24 hours before having contact with the concrete.
