How to Figure the Square Footage Measurements of a House Trailer

Square footage is calculated by multiplying the width of an area by the length. Housing square footage measurements can become complicated if there are areas such as indented patios and bay windows that must be added or subtracted from the equation. There may also be multiple storys or basements to consider. However, house trailers, or mobile homes, are simpler to measure because they are rectangular without any indentations or outcroppings. You can determine the square footage of a house trailer yourself with a long measuring tape and some basic math skills.

Hold one end of the measuring tape at an outside corner of the mobile home or have someone hold it for you. Pull the measuring tape to the end of one long side and write down how many feet and inches long it is. If you are doing this job alone, you can stake the end of the tape measure to the ground at the corner of the trailer with a screwdriver while you pull out the tape.

If the side of the trailer is longer than your measuring tape, make a mark on the ground where the tape ends and begin measuring from that point to the end of the trailer. Add the two measurements together to get the entire length of that side.

Repeat Step 1 for one of the short sides of the mobile home. Record this distance in feet and inches as well.

Convert the measurements for both sides to inches if either distance includes feet and inches. Multiply the number of feet by 12 and add any additional inches from the measurement. For example, if you have a 20 foot 6 inch wall, multiply 20 by 12 and add 6 for a total inch measurement of 246 inches.

Multiply the inches for the long side by the inches for the short side. If the long side is 246 inches and the short side is 96 inches, multiply 246 by 96 to get 23,616 square inches. Divide this resulting number by 144, which is the number of square inches in one square foot. This will give you square footage. Round the number to the nearest tenth of a foot if the decimals continue past that.
