How to Bind an Excel Table to an AutoCAD Drawing

AutoCAD is a program used by many architects and engineers to produce detailed drawings of what they are designing. In many cases, supporting documentation is needed next to the drawing in order for specifics to make sense. Microsoft Excel is used in specific instances to help organize data that may be pertinent to the drawing. Since architects and engineers are using two different types of media to get their ideas across, the ability to merge them together becomes essential. Fortunately for the user, there is a way to link an Excel file to an AutoCAD document.

Instructions

    • 1

In the AutoCAD command box, type "TABLE" to start the command.

    • 2

Select the "From A Data Link" option and click the "Data Link Manager" icon. These options can be found under "Insert Options."

    • 3

Click "Create A New Excel Data Link" and type in a name for the link. Organizing by name is essential, so make sure that you name the link properly.

    • 4

Browse through your computer and select the file you wish to import. You can only select one Excel file at a time.

    • 5

Open up "Data Link Options" and click "Cell Contents." Uncheck the "Convert Data Types To Text" icon but check "Retail Formulas" and "Allow Writing To Source File." This will ensure that the original Excel file remains.

    • 6

Click "OK" to exit the dialog boxes and then insert the table in your AutoCAD drawing. Click on the drawing to select an insertion point. Follow the remaining commands.
