How to Build a Grass Tennis Court

Tennis typically is played on four different surfaces. Asphalt, clay, rubber and grass make up most of the ATP and WTA Tour's scheduled events. Playing tennis on grass yields different bounces when compared with other surfaces. Typically, the ball moves faster and tends to have more of a skid effect upon impact with the ground. Grass courts are easy to install on your property if resources and adequate space are not a problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Level the ground with a tractor to suit the needs of the environment on which the court is being built.

    • 2

Measure the appropriate dimensions for your tennis court in the allotted space and mark the dimensions accordingly. A standardized tennis court is 78 feet by 36 feet. This is the exact measurement for a tennis court that includes the doubles alleys. Depending on how much room you have to work with, it's a good idea to expand the dimensions by at least 10 feet each, if plausible. This gives more room for chasing down balls and possibly increasing the duration of future points to be played.

    • 3

Use your shovel to dig two holes for the net posts. The exact location of the posts will depend on the working space, but make sure the net posts measure 42 feet from each another. Ideally, you want this to be equidistant to your court as a whole, but that's not mandatory if you have limited space.

    • 4

Cement the net posts into their holes and smooth the surface surrounding them.

    • 5

Apply the top soil and fertilizer to the court and make it as smooth as possible. Make sure the edges surrounding the posts are also completely covered with soil and smoothed out.

    • 6

Plant your seeds in the winter or spring months. Doing this allows for a playable summer season.

    • 7

Water the grass daily and try to keep the length of the grass from 1/2" to 3/4". Consistently mow the grass to keep the grass in these parameters.

    • 8

Paint the lines with chalk paint in the early summer months. Refer to the resource section of this article for precise dimensions of a tennis court.

    • 9

Install the net 39 inches high on each post and 36 inches in the middle.
