How to Fill Gaps in Crown Molding

Installed crown molding has a gap between the wall and the crown molding. Typically, this gap is filled with caulk. This patch can last for several years. Instructions

    • 1

Slide a putty knife between the crown molding and the wall and slide it back and forth to expel loose particles of caulk from the gap. If the old caulk is not coming away easily, use a utility knife to cut the old caulk and remove it with the putty knife.

    • 2

Cut the tip of the caulk tube at the ¼-inch line on the nozzle, using a utility knife. Place the tube into the caulk gun and press the plunger of the gun into place at the bottom of the caulk tube.

    • 3

Spread a small bead of caulk slowly along the gap between the crown molding and the wall.

    • 4

Smooth the caulk along the gap with your finger and a damp cloth. Use your finger to smooth the caulk into the gap. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the excess caulk from the wall or molding. Allow the caulk to dry for 24 hours before painting.
