XRef Tutorial for AutoCAD 2009

AutoCAD XRefs and attachments are used to coordinate architectural and engineering drawings. By using the XRef command, you can reference an existing file into a separate file. This tool is handy when it comes to lining up floors in a building. The Attach command is similar to the XRef tool. The main difference with the Attach command is the ability to move and modify the file once it is referenced in. Unfortunately, XRefs are fixed in place once they are attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the file you wish to reference or attach another file to. Make sure you are in model space before proceeding.

    • 2

Type in "MXREF" into the command bar. A dialog box will pop up if this is done properly.

    • 3

Select the file from within your job folder that you would like to reference in. Remember, since you are trying to "reference" in a drawing, the two files must be within the same folder. If they are not, try the "Attach" command. Once you have selected the file, you will be asked a series of questions.

    • 4

      Select "Attach."

    • 5

Select the origin point for your referenced drawings. It would be wise to select (0,0) for your insertion point. If you need the reference at a different point, simply enter those coordinates.

    • 6

Enter any scale factor or rotation factor as desired in the next two prompts. Depending on your use, you can scale or rotate the reference.
