How to Pour Concrete Against a House

If you are adding a concrete surface such as a patio or staircase to the outside of your home, anchoring the structure to the facade of the house is a way to join the two and to give the concrete surface security. Although many people who are not experts in construction attempt to simply pour the concrete very near the home's foundation in hopes that it will somehow attach itself, this is not the correct way to accomplish the jointing.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Standard 12-inch rebar

Instructions

Position any forms that you will be using snugly up against the foundation of the house. Use a backless form for patios and other flat surfaces. Be sure that the form is in the location where you want to pour the concrete.

    • 2

Drill a series of evenly spaced holes along the foundation, one for every 1 to 2 feet of length where the concrete will touch the house. If your form uses cross boards, place the holes beneath the top one; if it does not, drill into the foundation 1 to 2 inches lower than the top of the front board. Push a 12-inch piece of standard rebar into each hole as far as possible.

Pour the concrete into the form and finish it as necessary for your project. Cure the concrete for the length of time required for your surface. Remove the form; the concrete adheres securely to the rebar, which will hold it in place.
