Melamine is used in laminate floors, kitchen counters, automotive coatings and banknotes. It is also used as a flame-retardant in mattresses and furniture.
Consumer products containing melamine are safe for use, even if oral contact occurs, according to DSM. In addition, melamine causes only mild irritation if inhaled. However, ingesting melamine is very dangerous.
In 2007, pet food manufactured in China was found to have dangerous levels of melamine, according to the World Health Organization. In addition, some sources of Chinese milk were contaminated with melamine. Other food products made with milk, such as powdered infant formula and frozen yogurt, were also found to contain melamine.
