How to Replace a Boxster Oil Separator

The Porsche Boxster is a mid-engine, two-seat sports car that was introduced in 1997 as an entry-level offering from the German company. While overall a reliable, well-engineered vehicle, like any car, the Boxster has its share of minor issues. One of them can involve the air-oil separator, a small device in the engine bay that routes gas fumes back into the intake. The oil separator is part of the emissions controls on the Boxster. If it fails, this can lead to white smoke from the exhaust pipe, rough running and even a CEL ("Check Engine Light") notification.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the car on a flat surface. Turn the ignition switch on and raise the top about 24 inches. Remove the key. Pull off the tension lines located on either side of the top that are fastened with a ball and socket on the end.

    • 2

Pull the front edge of the cloth top away from the plastic cover and off the top’s frame. Leave the top laying back, out of the way of the engine cover. Remove the carpeted trim that covers the engine cover. Remove the bolts that fasten the engine cover to the vehicle, remove the engine cover and set it aside.

    • 3

Locate the oil separator, which is the small, black plastic device located near the intake with two hoses coming off it. Remove the hose that goes to the intake by squeezing the clamp on the end of it and pulling it off the oil separator.

    • 4

Lift the rear of the car with a floor jack. Lower it onto a pair of jack stands, ensuring that it's securely supported. Locate the oil separator by looking up through the engine bay. Remove the hose clamp with special quick disconnect pliers. Pull the hose off the oil separator.

    • 5

Remove the two bolts that fasten the oil separator in place with a socket and ratchet. Install the new oil separator with the two bolts. Install the hose that was removed. Lower the car. Install the upper hose that goes to the intake.

Reinstall the engine cover with the bolts that hold it in place. Install the carpeting. Reconnect the top.
