What Is External Cladding?

According to the designbuild-network website, external cladding is a "protective, insulated or aesthetic fixed layer added to the exterior walls of a building."
  1. Function

    • Protecting buildings from the elements is one of the main functions of cladding. Cladding can also serve decorative purposes. For example, stone cladding on a cottage might add to its aesthetic desirability---while defending it against harsh conditions.

    Insulation

    • The insulating properties of cladding will depend on the type of materials used. Brick cladding, for example, will absorb rainwater and dry out without penetrating the inner wall. Joints between cladding may also be treated with sealants to provide extra insulation.

    Types

    • Several types of cladding are used to insulate buildings. Materials used include wood, stone, brick, concrete and metal. Metal cladding is particularly durable and is often used on industrial buildings.

    Considerations

    • Cladding may need to be replaced after some years. The placing of cladding over an old building is known as overcladding, according to the Corus in Construction.
