Creative Crown Molding Ideas

Crown molding is a common architectural element used by homeowners, decorators, contractors and builders. While many homeowners want crown molding on their walls, there are other creative uses for crown molding. Thinking outside of the box will allow you to use crown molding in many different areas of your home.
  1. Double Layer Moldings

    • Double layering is an excellent way to enhance the look of crown molding in your room. Although crown molding is attractive by itself, double layering two moldings adds drama and depth to your room. Double layered moldings usually consist of one larger piece of crown molding with a smaller piece of molding installed beneath. Homeowners can also double layer crown molding by turning a baseboard molding upside down, installing it on the wall and then installing the crown molding on top of the baseboard molding so that the two look like one larger molding.

    Crown Molding in the Kitchen

    • Kitchen cabinets are ideal candidates for crown molding, which adds a touch of detail to your cabinets to give them a more traditional look. Crown molding is also a convenient way to update older kitchen cabinets without completely changing the look or layout of your kitchen. Install crown molding on your kitchen cabinet by first installing a frame on the top of the cabinets. Construct the frame out of 1x2 boards, and nail the frame into place on the cabinet. Once the frame is in place, nail the crown molding to the frame.

    Crown Molding Shelving

    • Crown molding can dress up existing bookshelves or decorate a simple wall shelf. Similar to installing crown molding on kitchen cabinets, nail the crown molding meant for bookshelves to a 1x2 board frame on the top of the cabinet. Dress up a small wall shelf with crown molding by attaching the molding to the under side of a wall shelf. Paint the molding and board the same color before hanging the shelf on the wall.
