About the Florida Building Code & Handicap Ramps

The Florida Building Code includes a statewide set of standards that specify safety requirements for both renovations and new construction. Handicap ramps, also called accessible ramps, provide egress for physically disabled persons.
  1. Code Sections

    • The Florida Building Code fully explains handicap ramp specifications for nonresidential buildings under sections 11-4.7 and 11-4.8. Residential handicap ramp requirements can be found in the Florida Residential Code in section R311.6.

    Specifications Covered

    • The handicap ramp specifications covered in the Florida Building Code include elements such as slope and rise, width, surface of ramp, landings and handrails. Each of these standards was tested for safety and accessibility.

    Legislation

    • The Americans with Disability Act is a federal civil rights law for disabled persons. ADA has developed a set of design standards to help ensure fair accessibility for those with disabilities. The Florida Building Code is certified to be in compliance with ADA.
