How to Remove Support Columns

Support columns exist inside and outside a home. The columns are most often wood beams covered by a veneer or facade giving the appearance of a classic column, such as Roman column. The beams support the structure of the roof or next level. Replacing a support column requires removing the column and either installing a new column or erecting a load bearing beam across the roof to be supported on the sides. Removing the original column is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the 3-foot board to the top of the 4-inch-by-4-inch beam, making a "T" shape. Use 8d nails and a hammer to join the two pieces.

    • 2

Cut the beam so that it is approximately 4 to 6 inches shorter than the height of the room. For example, if the ceiling is 8 feet high, the beam should be cut to 7 feet, 6 inches. Use a circular saw for this cut.

    • 3

Place the floor jack between 1 and 2 feet from the support column. Stand the 4-inch-by-4-inch beam on the floor jack with the wood board nailed to the top of the beam angled so that it is perpendicular to the ceiling studs. Use a stud finder to locate the direction of the ceiling studs. The board should support multiple studs.

    • 4

Raise the jack until it contacts the ceiling. Continue to raise the jack a little more so that the ceiling or roof structure is supported by the jack.

    • 5

Remove any decorative covers from the support column. A hammer and pry bar will make quick work of any plastic or vinyl veneers.

    • 6

Cut the support column near the base with a reciprocating saw. Cut the column about 6 to 8 inches above the ground.

    • 7

Grasp the upper portion of the column and pull it free from the ceiling. Use a pry bar to pull up the lower portion.
