How to Support Barn Beams

Mix the cement to make it a thick paste. Each brand of industrial cement is different in its mixing instructions, so you will need to read the instructions that came with the powdered cement mix. Make sure that it is mixed well and all of the powder has been absorbed. It is important that you make sure that the cement is well-mixed because a poor cement will do nothing to support your wooden beams.

Pour the cement around the base of the beam, making sure that it reaches all the way around. Give the cement the right amount of time to harden. This is also indicated on the instructions that came with the cement mix. Setting time typically is between four to nine hours, but this can vary depending on the grade of the cement as well as the temperature of the barn. Cooler temperatures will promote faster drying.

Coat the wood of the beam with an industrial binding finish which is available for purchase at any hardware store. Often, this finish is stuck in with all of the regular finishes in the store, so check and make sure that it is indicated in the directions to be a binding finish. Leave the coat to dry for about 12-24 hours and then apply a second coat for good measure. This will result in older wood having a stronger exterior.
