How to Combine Mouldings

There are many different types of mouldings available to homeowners today. These moldings range in function and form. Some mouldings are intended to decorate your walls while others are simply functional. Combining these mouldings together in your home will bring richness and depth to the architectural detail of your home. While the combination you choose is a personal preference, installing the mouldings typically follows a specific pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how you want the types of mouldings to look and function. Chair rail moulding combines with wainscoting moulding to create the look of raised panels and protect walls from sliding chairs. Similarly, crown moulding is often combined with several smaller mouldings to create the illusion of one large ornate moulding.

Measure the wall where the mouldings are going to be installed. Mark these measurements on the mouldings with a pencil.

    • 3

Place the moulding on the miter saw. Cut the moulding to size. Adjust the saw to a 45-degree angle to cut the corner pieces of the moulding. Repeat with each piece of moulding until each type of moulding has been cut.

    • 4

Secure the first moulding --- usually the largest moulding if you are stacking mouldings --- to the wall with a nail gun. Repeat with the smaller mouldings. Be careful when working with small, thin mouldings. These mouldings can split if nailed through a weak spot.

    • 5

Apply a small bead of caulk along the gap between the mouldings. Smooth the caulk with your finger.

    • 6

      Paint the mouldings as desired.
